Civil Engineering

Undergraduate and Post Graduate Program in Civil Engineering at JUIT Waknaghat have been developed to meet the latest requirements of the infrastructural development of our country in areas like Construction, Transportation, Hydropower and Environmental Engineering. The curriculum has been developed to keep it more practical and industry oriented without compromising on its academic rigor. Students are provided with comprehensive theoretical knowledge through lectures, tutorials and assignments covering the basic as well as advanced topics in various subjects of Civil Engineering. They are trained for practical understanding in departmental laboratories namely Concrete Technology, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Highway Engineering, and Surveying, in addition to the traditional Engineering Graphics and Workshop Practices.
The laboratories are equipped with modern equipments and facilities with highly trained manpower. Students are exposed to construction industry during the practical training in reputed construction companies including Larsen & Toubro, NHAI, Jaypee, AIMIL, Tata Projects, S.P. Singla, GRIL, JMC, and H.G. Infra. Training on software like STAAD Pro, MATLAB, Auto-CAD, Revit, MS-Project, Primavera, OpenSees, enhances employability of students in the various fields of Civil Engineering.

The Department of Civil Engineering offers an undergraduate degree (4 years) in the following two fields:

  • B.Tech. in Civil Engineering
  • B.Tech. in Civil Engineering with Computer Application

For post graduation, M.Tech. (2 years) in Civil Engineering with a specialization in the following three areas:

  • Construction Management
  • Structural Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering has an ample presence in consultancy projects in nearby areas due to its best in class laboratories. It is known for providing solutions to the real life problems. B.Tech. CE – Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)
We focus on the following objectives to realize our vision and missions.
PEO-1: To utilize appropriate theoretical, modelling concepts and communication skills in dealing with real life engineering problems and excellence in Civil Engineering profession.
PEO-2: To advocate the principle of self-learning and utilization of integrated knowledge through industrial and research training for benefitting the society effectively.
PEO-3: To conceptualize ,develop and complete large scale projects within the time frame along with adaptability to other internationalcultures within professional ethos and ethics.

 

Programme Specific Objectives (PSO)
PSO -1/3 will be evaluated over the project work conducted by the students before the award of the final B.E Civil Engineering Degree. PSO-2/4 will be evaluated over the different core, advanced and elective courses studied by the student over the eight semesters before the award of the final B.E Civil Engineering Degree.
PSO-1 : Emerge as competent technical professionals, using their skills in planning, design, construction and operation of the built environment, utilizing their skills to analyze and design systems, and managing technical activities involved in civil engineering projects.
PSO-2 :Understand their ethical, environmental as well as professional responsibilities so that they appreciate the impact that their engineering solutions can have on the sustainability, society and the nation as a whole.
PSO-3 : Acquire the analytical ability to create, analyze, formulate, and solve different problems in the field of Civil Engineering; and to identify and develop the necessary and suitable tools for the same.
PSO-4 : Be prepared for lifelong learning for becoming successful civil engineers and develop an understanding of the multidisciplinary approach and ability to relate engineering issues to broader social and human context, in which their engineering contributions will be utilized.
B.TECH. CE WITH COMPUTER APPLICATION – PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES (PEOS)
PEO-1: To analyze the real-life engineering problems demanding technical temperament and providing efficient and sustainable solution through modern computation techniques in civil engineering.
PEO-2: To tap the potential of new soft computing methods in civil engineering and encourage students towards analytical approach to fulfill the need the industry& research demands at national and international level.
PEO-3: To familiarize the students with high value research in the various domains of CE integrated with application of digital tools to motivate them in interdisciplinary involvement.

Graduate Attributes/Program Outcomes(POs)
Attainment of Program Outcomes PO-1 through PO-12 as given below will be assessed by direct assessment through Course Outcomes (COs).
PO-1. Engineering knowledge : Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and engg. specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
PO-2. Problem analysis : Identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze engineering problems to arrive at substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural, and engineering sciences.
PO-3. Design/development of solutions : Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components, processes to meet the specifications with consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

Research
The Department carries out research and development in the following fields of Civil Engineering:
  • Rockfill material modelling, Constitutive modeling, FEM in Geotechnical Engineering, Soil plasticity.
  • Slope stability problems (including seismic), Soil-nailing, Landfill design.
  • Fluvial hydraulics, Scouring, Flow of water around hydraulic structures such as bridge piers and abutments.
  • Concrete rheology, Development of HPC with Alcofine, micro-silica, etc., Composite materials, Prestressed concrete.
  • Dynamic analysis of structures subjected to extreme loading, and earthquakes, Seismic evaluation of existing buildings.
  • Active and passive control of tall structures against earthquakes, Smart structures.
  • Air pollution, Estimation of NOx / CO concentrations, and Solid-waste management.
  • Pavement Materials, Design and Maintenance, Optimization Techniques.
  • Development of mini-standard penetration test.
